坚果协会调查，发现是当年进口商为提价故意取名“美国大杏仁”。扁桃仁比杏仁产量高，营养低，因此初进中国时比杏仁便宜，但某些进口商为了卖出杏仁价，并迎合国人崇洋媚外的喜好，改名叫美国大杏仁。
